Lipid-based protein immobilization technique used to examine Salmonella enterica subspecies Typhimurium outer membrane proteins

 

Salmonella enterica subspecies Typhimuriurm (S. Typhimurium) is a major cause of gastroenteritis in a wide range of hosts, including humans, chicken, pigs, cattle, and rodents. The outer membrane proteins expressed by S. Typhimurium enable the bacterium to invade intestinal epithelial cells, leading to disease progression. Analysis of these surface proteins is on-going and represents an ideal target for the development of novel therapeutics and vaccines. Chooneea et al. describe the successful use of a lipid-based protein immobilization technique (LPI™) to further elucidate the outer membrane proteome of S. Typhimurium (ATCC® 700720™), identifying 54 outer membrane proteins.1 When compared with current sub-cellular fractionation procedures, the LPI™ technique demonstrated the widest coverage of outer membrane proteins for S. Typhimurium.
