ATCC Mantle Cell Lymphoma Cell Consortium (ATCC-MCLC) is intended to serve as a resource for researchers interested in mantle cell lymphoma (MCL). The goal of the ATCC-MCLC cell bank is to supply investigators in the lymphoma research community with well-characterized, consistent and uncontaminated cell lines for research use.
Established in 2006, the ATCC-MCLC collection is the result of a contract awarded to ATCC by the Lymphoma Research Foundation (LRF) to establish a cell bank to serve the mantle cell lymphoma research community.
The MCLC was formed in January 2005 by the Lymphoma Research Foundation (LRF) and is composed of over 85 laboratory and clinical scientists in North America and Europe who share lymphoma as their research focus. Because MCL is a rare form of lymphoma, it has not received as much research attention as some other forms of cancer. The formation of the consortium is in part a response to that situation. The goal of the MCL Consortium is to identify effective and curative treatment strategies for mantle cell lymphoma. The Consortium enables collaboration, sharing of information, and sharing of laboratory resources, while it also takes action to support MCL researchers such as developing this Cell Bank in partnership with ATCC, producing an annual MCL Workshop, raising funds to support special grants and multi-institutional recruitment for clinical trials.
In 2003, the LRF began funding research grants investigating mantle cell lymphoma, which is diagnosed in around 3000 persons annually in the U.S. Currently, LRF is the largest non-governmental funder of MCL research in the world. LRF's Mantle Cell Lymphoma Initiative and the MCL Consortium's activities have been supported with $21 million dollars as of January 5, 2007. LRF expects to fund additional research grants in 2007. Materials for Research
The ATCC-MCLC cell bank has begun accessioning items for the collection and, over the next few years, plans to accession a complete collection of available MCL cell lines for distribution to cancer researchers. As cell lines in this collection become available they will be added to the website. These materials are incorporated into ATCC's comprehensive online catalog.
