Taming Uncertainty: Reducing Animal By-Products in Cell Biology Workflows

August 29, 2024, at 12:00 PM ET

Abstract

Animal by-products (ABP) in cell biology reagents present several challenges to today’s researchers. Animal by-products introduce undesired variability to experiments as well increase the potential for contamination by adventitious pathogens and have additional regulatory burdens. These factors have led researchers to seek out alternative products for their cell biology processes which do not contain ABPs. In support of the research community, ATCC has developed a modified ABP-free McCoy's 5A medium formulation: McCoy’s 5A Medium, ABP-Free (ATCC 30-2011). Here, we will discuss how ATCC is supporting the research community with a diverse catalog of animal by-product free cell culture reagents and the ongoing development work to expand these offerings. Additionally, we will present data showing similar growth and viability characteristics of ATCC cell lines grown in both the original and the new medium formulations.

Key Points

  • Reagent selection is critical when developing cell biology workflows.
  • ATCC is expanding its offerings of animal by-product free reagents with the introduction of McCoy’s 5A Medium, ABP-Free (ATCC 30-2011).
  • We are now offering cell lines grown in the new McCoy’s 5A Medium, ABP-Free for a full end-to-end workflow solution.
